A must have for every air cooled vw. The little black sensor on the oil filter housing in the back the metal tip broke off which i believe is for oil temp but not sure. This was mad late at night so i couldn t get a new 1 right away. I installed the vdo oil pressure and temperature gauges in my 1970 vw but will give you the concept on installi.

This five minute installation could save your engine. Ok guys i was installing a oil pressure gauge in my obd1 12v vr. Vdo 300f oil temp sending unit 18 x 1 5mm fits they type 1 oil cooler relief plug which is an excellent location for mounting the vdo oil temperature sending unit in vw bugs ghias and busses. At 80 km hour the oil temperature drops to about 92c.

My beetle has a stock 1600cc dual port engine with a stock 34pict 3 carburetor and pertonix ignitor. The highest oil temperature i ve recorded so far is slightly over 100c when cruising at 100 km hour on a hot summer day with 30c ambient temperature. Simply replace your stock dipstick with this one attach one wire and the factory idiot light on your dash will flash and then light solid if your oil temp gets too high. As the engine is running a typical oil temp sensor is reading the temp of oil that s already cooled the engine oil that s run down from the head and oil that s squirted out of the bearings lands in the sump.
