Swamp Cooler Belt Tension

Most motors on swamp coolers have an automatic reset thermal overload.

Install new cooler pads. Lightly oil the bearing on the blower assembly and the motor if it has an oil receptacle. It should not be too tight or too loose. This belt can become loose if it becomes worn and stretches out over time or if the motor slips in its sliding mount.

When pressed it should move about one half inch. Once inside check the tension of the belt running from the swamp cooler motor to the fan. So while your cooler will run you ll have to. Roughly speaking there should be about one inch of play in the tension of your fan belt.

The tightening of the belt is a straightforward and simple operation. Step 3 check shaft bearings. There are a number of factors that can interfere with the transfer of air from the outside into the swamp cooler. Will too much belt tension on a swamp cooler cause the motor to burn out.
